The puppies are growing like crazy--Sadie is a super, attentive mama! They are just getting their teeth and have started eating solid food a couple of times a day. They love the beautiful sunny weather and enjoy playing outside when it is nice. We have started potty training in the whelping box and next week they will start learning to sleep in a crate and use the dog door. In the mean time all the kids in the house and the neighborhood are introducing them to the fun of playing with children!
Sadie surprised us all and delivered NINE beautiful healthy pups last Sunday afternoon--five boys and four girls. We really should't have been surprised that she had nine pups--the poor little thing looked like a pot-bellied pig by the end of her nine weeks!
We can always tell when the dogs are in labor and ready to deliver because they are determined to nest in a giant hole under the shed in the back yard. No matter now many times we fill it in or block it off the girls find it during labor!
Sadie was no different this time. I had to drag her out of her den early Sunday morning.
I always feel bad to pull the moms out of the den. It's so quiet and cool and dark and it smells like lovely dirt. As a garden lover the smell of dirt makes me happy! But it would be a disaster with a litter of newborn pups with no room for me to assist.
Once Sadie was back in the house she settled down in Benson's laundry basket in his closet. We let her stay there as long as she wanted. When we could tell that delivery was imminent we moved her out to the whelping box. Delivering puppies is a messy business--definitely too messy for the closet! But it is sweet and exciting as well!
As always she is a calm and devoted mama. Her puppies are growing by the day! They have had their dew claws removed and will open their eyes sometime this next week. We will do individual pictures when they are four weeks and have developed their own individual looks.
