After more than 24 hours of labor and 5 hours of delivery time
we have a little baseball team!
Paisley delivered NINE boys and One girl last night!
Paisley's temperature dropped from normal 101 degrees to 98.7 on Tuesday afternoon. It wasn't long before she began panting and pacing and pawing. We waited expectantly all night (not much sleep for any of us!). By Wednesday morning she refused to eat and wouldn't leave my side except to go outside and dig behind the shed but it wasn't until just after 10pm Wednesday night that we had our first little girl born. The first two puppies were born next to my bed and then we moved Paisley and the babes out to the whelping box where we all had more room to move around.
Paisley delivered 10 puppies in a little more than 5 hours. By the time her TENTH little pup arrived she was completely exhausted.. Fonda and I were there with her the entire time. We went through a lot of towels and absorbent pads as we suctioned each little mouth and rubbed the babes dry while Paisley kept busy cleaning up the birthing fluids. We changed the disposable pads under Paisley after each delivery and trimmed the umbilical cords that were too long. As each baby was born, we weighed him and attached a colored collar.
Once all the pups had arrived, Paisley relaxed and ate a bowl of food and laid down so everyone could nurse and sleep.. It wasn't long before mom and babies were snuggled together for a rest after a long and exhausting day for everyone!
